I love to gift my students with something meaningful that encourages joy and learning at home. Here are a few homemade ideas that have delighted many students for the past few years. Recently, a mom of a 4th-grader sent me a photo of the storytelling I had gifted her son several years before. It was still in use!
The Gingerbread Man Storytelling Kit
I start with a gingerbread treat box and add a small butterfly clip on top to make it easy for little hands to open and close independently. I fill the box with storytelling props. The great thing about traditional tales is that you can create your own version with whatever props you can find. Here are my favorite characters and additions.: a cat, a dog, a horse, a dinosaur (my fox), a gingerbread man, and a piece of blue fabric for the river.
Please see my previous post for more details on using The Gingerbread Man in kindergarten.
Felt Board Storytelling Set: There Was A Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow
This story was sold in class packs on Scholastic. The felt pieces for this story were simple shapes to cut out and create in bulk. I bought a piece of stiff felt, about 8×11 inches as the board for each child. I then packed each set and the book inside a zippered pouch.
The kids loved opening these and building their snowman piece by piece as we read the story.
